What is architecture?

The short answer

Architecture is the design of buildings and spaces — structure, light, material and use resolved together into something buildable.

Architecture is the discipline that turns a requirement — a home, a school, a factory, a memorial — into a designed, buildable space. It works across structure, servicing, materials, light, climate and how people actually move through a building.

It is both practical and cultural: a good design has to satisfy budgets and regulations while also carrying meaning for the people who use it. That is why architects draw, model, specify and then supervise rather than simply produce an image.
