What does an architect actually do?

The short answer

An architect takes a brief from concept to drawings, approvals, specifications and site supervision — not just a pretty render.

The work runs from briefing and site study through concept design, schematic design, statutory drawings for approval, detailed working drawings, material specification, tendering support and site visits during construction.

Most of the value is in coordination: aligning structure, services, contractors and the client so the built result matches the approved design. Drawings are the instrument, not the deliverable in itself.
